Over the past decade, the United States has seen a dramatic increase in oil and gas production. With an estimated 450,000 workers employed in 2011, the oil and gas industry has averaged 108 deaths per year, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

In 2012, NPR reported 138 oil and gas employees were killed on the job. This fatality rate is nearly eight times higher than the all-industry rate of 3.2 deaths per every 1,000 workers.

Ryan Hill of the CDC’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Administration (NIOSH) claims tough working conditions add to industry dangers. It’s not unusual for employees to work 12- to 14-hour shifts for a week or two straight, and most work is completed outdoors regardless of weather conditions.

It’s important for workers and employers to identify hazards in their workplace. If you or a loved one has been injured in an oilfield accident due to negligence, it’s important to be aware of your rights. If you have immediate medical concerns, consult with your primary physician.
