Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) are traditionally prescribed to treat heartburn, indigestion, gastritis and acid reflux. Nexium, Prilosec, and Prevacid are leading sellers among PPI drugs, an industry that exceeds 13 billion dollars annually.

More than 15 million Americans use PPIs, according to CBS News. As many as 70 percent of PPI prescriptions have been handed out inappropriately, and 25 percent of long-term users could stop taking the medication without suffering increased heartburn or acid reflux.

Two recently published studies confirm a significant increased risk to patients taking PPIs of developing both acute and chronic kidney disease. Over time, chronic kidney disease can lead to kidney failure, which can lead to regular dialysis and the need for a kidney transplant.
