While our favorite dishes may vary, we can all agree on how thankful we are for our friends and family. For some fun facts to share at the Thanksgiving table, we put together our favorite Turkey-Day stats.
- That’s a lot to gobble: Minnesota is the top turkey state, producing a whopping 46.5 million in 2011. That same year, cranberry production exceeded 750 million pounds and pumpkins topped 1.1 billion.
- Thanks to Thanksgiving, we have frozen dinners: In 1953, Swanson misjudged the number of frozen turkeys it would sell by 26 tons. To not put the extras to waste, the company sliced up the meat and repackaged it with trimmings on the side.
- Better bring the stretchy pants: The largest pumpkin pie ever baked weighed 2,020 pounds, according the the Guinness Book of World Records. The pie included 900 pounds of pumpkin, 155 dozen eggs, 300 pounds of sugar, and 250 pounds of crust.
- Honest Abe Loved Thanksgiving: It was President Lincoln who declared Thanksgiving a national holiday. This was in part thanks to the efforts of a magazine editor named Sarah Josepha Hale, who also wrote the nursery rhyme "Mary had a Little Lamb."
From all of us here at The Law Offices of Foster & Houston, we wish you and yours the happiest of Thanksgivings.
